Process for the surface treatment of a continuously cast steel product comprises cooling at least one part of at least one surface of the metallic product to give a defined lowering of the temperature of the surface to be processed. Independent claims are also included for: (A) an apparatus for the surface treatment of a continuously cast steel product comprising a device for treating the surface (6) connected to a cooling device (7); and (B) an apparatus for producing sheets and strips of metal comprising a continuous casting plant (1) for casting slabs of thickness 30-250 mm, a heating device and/or a temperature compensation device (4), a hot rolling train (5) and the apparatus for the surface treatment of a continuously cast steel product.
