Process for automatically measuring the birefringence of transparent bodies comprises radiating the sample to be investigated with a polarized light beam; receiving the intensity of the transmitted light of the sample after it has passed through an analyzer and determining the phase shift of the light intensity as a measure for the birefringence. The intensity signal is digitized and the position of the crossover is carried out by a micro- and/or signal processor with the aid of an interpolation process.
