PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish a method for distinguishing fine non-coking coal exhibiting a coking property-improving effect on a quick thermal treatment from fine non-coking coal not exhibiting the coking property-improving effect on the quick thermal treatment. SOLUTION: This method for producing coke for metallurgy comprising preliminarily quickly heating a part of coal to be charged in a chamber oven type coke oven up to a temperature below a coal-softening starting temperature obtained by a Gieseler plastometer method at a heating rate of >=1×102 deg.C/min and then carbonizing the heated coal as a part of a raw material in a coke oven to produce the coke. Therein, characteristic comprises using as a coal to be subjected to the quick heating treatment (1) a coal having a Gieseler maximum flow rate of 1 to 100, (2) a coal having an H/C atom number ratio of 0.75 to 0.85, when the total content of inert components in the coal is <30%, or a coal having an H/C atom number ratio of 0.70 to 0.80, when the total content of inert components in the coal is >=30%, or (3) a coal satisfying the above two conditions (1), (2). The heating rate is preferably 1×102 to 1×106 deg.C/min. Thereby, the coke can efficiently be produced from a large amount of the fine non-coking coal at a low cost.
