The device has a hinge unit (21,36), to project the cover (1) outwards about a front hinge axis (5) and a guide unit (7) to slide the cover. The guide unit has a guide path (11) formed in a sliding rail (12), in which a sliding carriage (13) can be slidingly driven along the vehicle and move the cover outwards. A locking unit (19,22,31) prevents movement of the cover along the guide bath during the hinged movement.
