PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an exhaust gas purifying catalyst which does not suffer poisoning by sulfur contained in the exhaust gas, which enhances NOX purifying capacity under a lean atmosphere where the conventional catalysts can not (exhibit) satisfactory activity and which sufficiently exhibits the function as a ternary catalyst and to provide a method for effectively and economically manufacturing the exhaust gas purifying catalyst. SOLUTION: This exhaust gas purifying catalyst contains such orthorhombic barium carbonate that has a spacing (d) of the lattice plane 111 of its crystal observed at d=3.72± 0.02 (Å) when the catalyst is heated at a temp. not lower 500 deg.C and lower than 800 deg.C and then cooled to normal temperature. The manufacturing method of this catalyst comprise incorporating water in the catalyst or catalyst powder, drying it, incorporating the barium compound in it and sintering the obtained material. |
