PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an environmental hygiene responsive type alkali-soluble resin which is a compound having carboxyl group in the molecule and a resin compound soluble in an aqueous solution of an alkali, washable without using an organic solvent and excellent in adhesion, adhesive strength, film properties, surface smoothness and controllability of softening point, to provide a method for producing the alkali-soluble resin and to obtain an alkali-soluble adhesive. SOLUTION: This alkali-soluble resin is characterized by being a (C) reactional product obtained by reacting (A) a compound having at least one epoxy group with (B) a monocarboxylic acid compound and further reacting the resultant reactional product with a polycarboxylic acid having >=2 carboxyl groups and/or a polycarboxylic acid anhydride.
