PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a highly oriented undrawn polyester yarn whose orientation is controlled in a spinning process and which realizes the improvement of productivity, to provide a method for stably and efficiently producing the highly oriented undrawn polyester yarn without causing a trouble on the process, and to provide the highly oriented undrawn polyester yarn having excellent drawability and excellent drawing and false-twisting properties. SOLUTION: A modified polystyrene-containing highly oriented undrawn polyester yarn having a birefringence of 25×10-3 to 70×10-3 and having the following characteristics. 1. Monomers forming the modified polystyrene comprises 85 to 99 mol.% of styrene monomer, 1 to 15 mol.% of an alkyl methacrylate monomer and maleic anhydride monomer. 2. The weight-average mol.wt. of the modified polystyrene is >=200,000. 3. The content of the modified polystyrene is 0.5 to 5 wt.% based on the polyester.
