PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a current cut-off type internal combustion engine ignition method which can prolong a life of an ignition plug. SOLUTION: When a set discharge duration passes after a primary current of an ignition coil 1 is cut off at an ignition position of internal combustion engine, a switch 2 for primary current control is made conductive and current is made to flow in the primary coil 1a of the ignition coil from a battery 3, thereby carrying out a discharge stop process for stopping discharge generated in the ignition plug 10. After discharge generated in the ignition plug is stopped, the conductive state of the switch 2 for primary current control is shifted to a cut-off state while gradually increasing internal resistance of the switch, and the cut-off state of the switch for primary current control is held till a next energization starting position is reached.
