PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cloth retaining device for setting a first cloth in a prescribed position, precisely putting a second cloth to be sewed in a prescribed position of the first cloth in a prescribed state, and precisely sewing the first cloth and the second cloth together. SOLUTION: This device comprises a support member for supporting a first cloth at a prescribed position, a preset plate provided on the support member, which is movable between a set position for placing a second cloth on the first cloth and a preset position separated from the set position while retaining the second cloth to be placed on the first cloth to place the second cloth at the prescribed position of the first cloth supported by the support member by the movement to the preset position, and retaining means which is movable between a retaining position for the first cloth supported by the support member and a part of the second cloth placed on the first cloth and a release position of releasing the retaining and provided on the support member so as so allow the movement of the preset plate from the set position to the preset position in the retaining position.
