PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber which not only has an excellent fibril-forming property, scarcely generates a smell and so on, and has excellent handleability, and to provide a method for efficiently producing the fiber. SOLUTION: An easily fibril-forming fiber which is a sea-island fiber comprising a vinyl alcohol-based polymer (component A) as a sea component and a polymer (component B) incompatible with the component A as an island component, contains a fibril-forming property-improving agent comprising a ketone compound in an amount of <=1 wt.%, and has a fibril-forming index of >=50 sec.
