PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of simply producing 2-nitroimidazole in high yield and a process of efficiently extracting the objective product from the resultant aqueous solution. SOLUTION: 1. This production process for 2-nitroimidazole is characterized by adding a base to the reaction mixture, when an aqueous acidic solution of imidazole-2-diazonium salt is allowed to react with a nitrite salt in the presence of copper or a copper compound. 2. This extraction process for 2- nitroimidazole is characteristically carried out in the presence of an weak inorganic or organic, when 2-nitroimidazole is extracted from the aqueous solution with an organic solvent.
