PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst used suitably for manufacturing benzyl ester (esters) of p-methyl benzyl acetate, p-xylylene diacetate, or the like, for example, by reacting a benzyl compound (hydrocarbon) such as p-xylene with arboxylic acids such as acetic acid in the presence of oxygen in an industrial scale and to provide a method for efficiently manufacturing the esters at low cost. SOLUTION: The esters are obtained by an oxidization reaction (preferably liquid phase reaction) of the hydrocarbon with the carboxylic acids in the presence of oxygen and the ester manufacturing catalyst containing palladium and at least one element selected from the group consisting of gold, alkali metals and alkaline earth metals by 5 or higher molar ratio of each element to the palladium. It is more preferable that this catalyst further contains bismuth. |
