PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple continuously variable transmission easy in manufacture, wide in a shift range and capable of setting an output shaft to zero rotation and reverse rotation by shift operation. SOLUTION: This continuously variable transmission is provided with an input shaft 1, a shaft 3 concentric with the input shaft, brake devices 2, 13 capable of making the shaft 3 nonrotatable and capable of freely idly rotating concentrically with the input shaft 1, an arm 14 fixed to the input shaft 1, an intermediate shaft 11 rotatably journalled to one end of the arm, a pulley type continuously variable transmission for joining the shaft 3 and the intermediate shaft 11, an output shaft 8 rotatably journalled concentrically with the input shaft 1, a V pulley 7 fixed to the output shaft 8 and a V belt 10 for joining the V pulley 7 and a V pulley 6 fixed to the intermediate shaft 11.
