PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a motor driven type clamping device, to enhance the accuracy of control and to make the device small in size. SOLUTION: A motor driven type clamping device has a movable platen 35, a motor generating rotation and moving the movable platen 35 forward and backward on the basis of the rotation, an output shaft outputting the rotation generated by the motor and a ball screw shaft and a ball nut which convert the rotating movement of the output shaft into a linear movement to make a toggle mechanism operate. A position according to the rotation generated by the motor is detected directly. In this case, the rotating movement of the output shaft based on the rotation generated by the motor is converted into the linear movement by the ball screw shaft and the ball nut and thereby the movable platen 35 is moved forward and backward. Therefore no belt needs to be used.
