PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially equalize changes in the valve lift characteristics of the right and left banks of a V-type internal combustion engine with driveshafts which rotate in the same direction for the right and left banks. SOLUTION: Cylinder heads 10R and 10L for a right and a left bank are each mounted with a variable valve system. Each variable valve system is so designed, that a rotating driveshaft 11 opens/closes an intake valve 19 via an eccentric cam 12, ring-like link 13, rocker arm 16, rod-like link 17 and rocker cam 18. A control shaft 14, when it is turned, changes the attitude of the rocker arm 16 via a control cam 15 to change lift characteristics. As viewed in the axial direction of the driveshafts 11, the variable valve systems for the right and left banks are symmetrical made laterally, so that the control shafts 14R and 14L in the right and left banks rotate in the same direction.
