PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carboxylic acid by hydrolyzing the cyano group of a nitrile compound with variant microorganism in a high yield, to provide a method for producing a cyanocarboxylic acid by selectively hydrolyzing only the specific cyano group of the corresponding polynitrile compound, and to provide the variant microorganism catalyzing the reaction. SOLUTION: This method for producing a carboxylic acid by converting the cyano group of a nitrile compound into a carboxyl group with a microorganism, characterized by using a variant microorganism defecting or lacking an ability for converting the cyano group into an amide group, is provided. Rhodococcus sp. SD 826 (FERM P-17598) strain is provided.
