PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a dialkyl 5-bromoisophthalate compound, by which the objective position on the benzene nucleus is selectively brominated without causing the hydrolysis reaction of the ester group of a dialkyl isophthalate of raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing a dialkyl 5-bromoisophthalate compound, characterized by brominating a dialkyl isophthalate represented by the general formula [1] (R1 and R2 are a 1 to 10C alkyl the same as or different from each other) with an N-bromoisocyanuric acid represented by the general formula [2] (R3 is H atom, sodium atom or potassium atom) in a strong acid as a solvent.
