PURPOSE: A smart card and a method for making its historical character are provided to automatically recognize a card type in one smart card application program by making historical character of ATR(Answer-to-Reset), and automatically execute a command and a function of each card. CONSTITUTION: A smart card stores card characteristics, card operation sequence, ATR(Answer-to-Reset), and a transfer protocol, etc. The smart card fields in historical characters(T1-Tk) of ATR by a predetermined byte. The fields are used to indicate a card manufacturer name(Vender-ID), a card or chip operation system(COS), and a version number. The historical characters are of at least 4 bytes, record the Vendor-ID, the COS, and a version number in a field over 4 bytes, and records a self-information in a remaining field.
