PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make compact the entirety of a printer by shortening the length in the carrying direction. SOLUTION: A recording sheet 2 is discharged through a sheet feed section 3, a recording section 4, and a fixing section 5 to the outside. At the recording section 4, the recording sheet 2 is reciprocated and an image is recorded thereon by means of a thermal head 7 in the order of three color planes. Image of each color is fixed optically at the fixing section 5. When the marginal parts are cut off, the recording sheet 2 is returned back to the recording section 4 after a final image is fixed thereto and then the fixing section 5 is retracted from a carrying passage 2a and a cutting section 6 is set. The fixing section 5 and the cutting section 6 are juxtaposed with respect to the carrying passage 2a in the direction intersecting the plane of the recording sheet 2.
