PURPOSE: A device and a method for controlling over output are provided to prevent over load from being occurred on an electric component by detecting a signal output through an output terminal of a system, comparing the signal with the predetermined maximum output reference level, and adjusting the signal output through the output terminal based on the compared data to be lower than the maximum output level. CONSTITUTION: An intermediate control part(12) treats and adjusts a source data reproduced or inputted from various media(10) according to a control signal with respect to volume or output inputted from the outside. An amplifier(14) amplifies the source data output by the intermediate control part(12) to a predetermined level. An A/D converter(22) detects the output signal output by the amplifier(14) and converts the same into digital data. A system controller(24) compares an output level of the data detected by the A/D converter(22) with the predetermined reference level, controls the intermediate control part(12) if the output level is higher than the reference level, and adjusts the output level to be reduced. The present invention has an advantage of extend a product's life as well as preventing a component from being damaged by removing over load applied to the component, including a speaker(16), in advance.
