PURPOSE: A communication method between digital exchanges having different companding systems is provided to prevent a data distortion state by executing conversion for a voice call and a data call each, in communication between digital exchanges having their respective companding systems, a mu-law system and an A-law system. CONSTITUTION: A main control unit in a transmitting side exchange notifies an ISDN PRI(Integrated Service Digital Network Primary Rate Interface) that the mutual conversion of companding systems(mu-law to A-law or A-law to mu-law) is available(S1). A network setup layer, after confirming the notification state, exchanges a setup message necessary for the conversion operation with the main control unit and deciphers whether communication between exchanges is a voice call or a data call(S2). Based on a deciphered result, the network setup layer carries out the conversion operation for each of the channels of the PRI(S3).
