PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sense if a sheet can be fed or not by a feed roller prior to feeding by the feed roller. SOLUTION: The sheet feeding device comprises a sheet stacking table 7 for stacking sheets P, a feed roller 2 abutting to the uppermost sheet of the stacked sheets on the table 7 for feeding it, and a sheet abutting member 3 having an abutting part 3a abutting to the uppermost sheet on the table 7 and vertically moving in compliance with the sheet amount stacked on the table 7. The abutting part of the sheet abutting member is positioned on a virtual line of sheet feed direction passing a position near the feed roller and approximately in the center across the width.
