A vehicle tailgate (1) is hinged about an horizontal axis (3) and is moved between fully closed and fully open positions (A, B) by an electric drive (5). The drive uses an electric motor and clutch which locks under voltage to rotate a belt which moves a tailgate actuating arm (16). Control is exercised through a sequence switch (19) with automatic lock (6) operation and the tailgate may be stopped in an intermediate position (C).
