The aim of the invention is to make the post-treatment of exhaust gases more efficient. To this end, a multicylinder internal combustion engine with a catalyst is provided with a control. For heating the catalyst the ignition time (Za, Zb, Zc, Zd, Ze, ...) on one of the cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) is adjusted to "late" and after a predetermined time interval (tint) the ignition time (Za, Zb, Zc, Zd, Ze, ...) on another cylinder (1, 2, 3, 4) is adjusted to "late", until finally the adjustment has been performed successively on all cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) of the internal combustion engine. After another predetermined time interval (tint) the adjustment on one of the cylinders (1, 2, 3, 4) is restarted until a further heating of the catalyst is no longer necessary. |
