A method of monitoring the functionality of a component, forming part of a module or sub-assembly of an electrical device during operation of the device, requires loading the module or sub-assembly with a test pulse and ascertaining and evaluating the reaction of the component or sub-assembly resulting from a special property of the component. For monitoring the holding-force of a permanent magnet arranged as part of a release/trip magnet (11) in an over-current release/trip of a low-voltage (LV) power switch (2) built into a power distribution network; the permanent magnet restrains a spring-loaded impact armature in the event of an over-current in the power distribution network, and the release/trip coil is loaded with a current pulse, at a time-point prior to the forecast control/drive of the release/trip magnet (11). The duration of the current pulse is less than that required for a response of the release/trip magnet.
