An apparatus to measure the proportion of breathing gas in the channel of a respiration system has an initial gas measurement channel (23) parallel to the bypass channel (11), with an electrochemical measurement cell (28) as the gas sensor is new. A throttle (26) is in the initial gas measurement channel (23), between the gas sensor (28) and the channel (7) which carries the inhalation gas. A pressure sensor (29) is downstream of the gas sensor (28). The entry (25) into the gas measurement channel (23) within the gas supply channel (5) is upstream of the bypass (11).
