A plasma screen comprises a support plate (2); a transparent front plate (1); a ribbed structure dividing the space between the support plate and the front plate into plasma cells which are filled with a gas; one or more electrode arrays for producing quiet electrical discharges in the cells; and a phosphor layer (10) containing a phosphor material selected from rare earth metal borates of formula: EAM<1>1-x-yM<2>xEuyB9O16 (where, EA = Ca, Sr or Ba; M<1> = Gd, La; M<2> = Y, Lu, Sc or In; 0 x <= 0.5; 0.01 <= y <= 0.4), and M<3>1-r-ssYtEusBO3 (where, M<3> = Sc, In, Lu; 0.01 <= r <= 0.99 and 0.01 <= s <= 0.15).
