The drive system comprises: - a drive aggregate (12) which stands at least time-wise under the control of a control device (36); - a gearbox arrangement (24), preferably an automated gearbox arrangement that can be shifted by the control device; and - an automated clutch arrangement (18). The drive shaft (14) of the drive aggregate in the clutch arrangement can be coupled with a gearbox input (22) shaft of the gearbox arrangement for their common rotation and which can be adjusted by the control device between an engaged and a disengaged position. With the procedure, when the drive system is in a state in which the clutch arrangement is in a partially disengaged position, is engaged in the engagement direction and a speed and/or torque of the drive aggregate is/are to be increased according to an operation of a travel operation organ (66), the following steps are executed. The clutch arrangement is not adjusted further in the engagement position. The drive aggregate is controlled independently of the operation of the travel operation organ so that a speed of the drive aggregate is adapted to a speed of the gearbox input shaft. When the speed of the drive aggregate lies in the region of the speed of the gearbox input shaft, the clutch arrangement is adjusted in the engagement direction. After a clutch setpoint position is attained, the independent control ends.
