A linear motor which improves a motor efficiency and is manufactured by a simplified manufacturing method, and which comprises a cylindrical movable unit (21) with the cross point of X- and Y-axes as its center axis, inner yokes (22) that are arranged inside the movable unit (21) with predetermined gaps in the radial directions of the movable unit (21) therebetween and composed of a number of approximately rectangular thin plates (23) layered in the X-axis direction, and outer yokes (24) that are arranged outside the movable unit (21) with predetermined gaps therebetween in the radial direction of the unit (21) and composed of a number of approximately rectangular thin plates (25) layered in the same direction as the layering direction of the thin plates (23) of the inner yokes (22). The movable unit (21) is composed of a pair of permanent magnets (33 and 34) magnetized in a direction from the inner yoke (22) side to the outer yoke (24) side. Therefore, the instability of the thrust of the linear motor can be avoided, the motor efficiency can be improved and the manufacturing method of the linear motor can be simplified.
