The invention relates to a process for preparing magnesium oxide through pyrohydrolysis, wherein magnesium chloride is thermally decomposed under influence of heat originating from combustion, wherein the combustion takes place in a first region and wherein magnesium chloride is decomposed in the presence of water to provide magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride in a second region, which is separate from said first region. Also claimed is the preparation of a mixture of metal oxides by the same method, the as-prepared magnesium oxide or mixture of metal oxide and the use thereof as frac proppant in the oil and/or gas industry.
