The invention relates to a method and apparatus for detecting the movements which take place between a body formed by an abutment and a body formed by a section, adjacent to said abutment, of a construction, or between two bodies formed by adjacent sections of a construction at the location of an expansion joint present between said bodies. According to the invention, a scribe plate is fastened to the one body and a scriber to the other body. The scriber being positioned at least virtually horizontally and perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the body, while a point of the scriber bears against the scribe plate. If movements in the horizontal and/or vertical direction occur in the process between the proximate ends of the bodies, these movements will be plotted on the scribe plate with the aid of the scriber.
