The core has a number of core plates (14) of weakly magnetic material stacked in a defined direction orthogonal to an armature attraction direction to form magnetic circuits between the armature and core plates when the actuator is operated, two non-magnetic core holders (11,12), an isolator and an attachment arrangement (15). The attachment arrangement holds the core plates and core holders rigidly together securely to form a unified arrangement.
