An engine block, comprising a cylinder head, a plurality of crankshaft bearing caps, a cylinder block disposed between the cylinder head and the bearing caps, a plurality of screw members for connecting the cylinder head to the bearing caps, and a plurality of columnar bodies provided between the cylinder head and the bearing caps to receive the tightening force of the screw members, wherein the weight of the cylinder block can be reduced by a remarkable reduction in required strength thereof.
