A mobile motorized apparatus (12) for moving medical imaging equipment (16) about a portion of a body of a patient (18). The apparatus (12) includes a lower chassis (44) and an upper chassis (37). The upper chassis (37) can be moved in a selective and controlled manner between a retracted and extended position. The lower chassis has precision movement to mechanically guide the equipment about the patient. The movement is enabled by the use of separate drive motors (54) for the drive wheels (64). An omni-directional third wheel (52) is used to support and stabilize the lower chassis.
