The core has a number of core plates (14) of weakly magnetic material stacked in a defined direction orthogonal to an armature attraction direction to form magnetic circuits between the armature and core plates when the actuator is operated, two non-magnetic core holders (11,12), an isolator and an attachment arrangement. Each core plate has at least one protrusion matching a recess in the adjacent plate to prevent relative motion.
