A process for the oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous feedstock with an oxygen-containing gas, wherein the hydrocarbonaceous feedstock is mixed with the oxygen-containing gas prior to oxidation in an oxidation zone and wherein an oxidant is added to the hydrocarbonaceous feedstock before the feedstock is mixed with the oxygen-containing gas in an amount in the range of from 0.005 to 10% (mole/mole) of oxidant based on the feedstock.
