The free end of a mechanical linkage (1) has a holder for an instrument or lens. The holder is linked by an at least two-dimensional linkage-mechanism to the mechanical linkage which comprises a ball (3) in a mounting consisting of a U-shaped holder frame (2). The instrument or lens is contained in a hole (3a) in the ball. The free arms of the U shaped frame have axially aligned holder-dies (4,4a) between which the ball is clamped.
