Low pressure mercury vapour fluorescent lamp - amalgam forming metal is used for mercury vapour pressure control

The amalgam forming metal e.g. indium, is placed inside the lamp envelope at both hot and cold points, esp. at the widening part of glass foot tube. It combines following features: a hermetically sealed, long, light emitting envelope (10) filled with ionised noble gas insertion structures (13) with a foot (14) attached to the envelope (10) and inserted into it at each end with an electrode (17) attached to each foot (14) end. At least one of the inserts (13) has a mercury distributing device fastened to it. A quantity of an amalgam forming material is distributed on the inner surface of the lamp.
