The design of e.g. a domestic washer/dryer is modified by the addition of a turbo-compressor (F) and expansion turbine (G) in the dryer air outlet channel, followed by an extra heater element (C). The turbo-compressor and expansion turbine are on a common shaft driven by an electronically regulated motor (M). The original condenser is replaced by a heat exchanger (B), whose cold side is in the inlet channel and warm side in the channel between the compressor and turbine. A condenser (H) is placed after the expander.
