Erythromycin derivs. of formula (I) and their acid addn. salts are new: wavy line indicates 10(R) or 10(S) methyl; R1, R2 = H or up to 24C opt. unsatd. hydrocarbyl (opt. interrupted by 1 or more heteroatoms and opt. carrying 1 or more functional gps.); or R1 + R2 = a heterocycle, opt. with 1 or more additional heteroatoms (N, O and/or S); or R1 + R2 = a gp. of formula (i); R1', R2' = H or up to 23C opt. unsatd. hydrocarbyl (opt. interrupted or substd. as for R1); Z = H or residue of up to 18C carboxylic acid.
