The invention relates to a process for the purification of the effluents resulting from petroleum processing, by coagulation-flocculation with organic reagents, separating the phases by settling-flotation. According to the invention, the process is characterized in that the coagulation-flocculation operation is carried out at an effluent pH ranging from 6.5 ... 9 by addition of cationic polyethylectrolyte based on polyacrylamide having high molecular mass and 40 % cationicity, as 0.1 % solution in an optimum dose of 1 ... 2 mg active substance/liter, followed by settling-flotation for an hour, separating a volume of sludge representing 0.5 % of the effluent volume subjected to the treatment, the sludge separated after treatment being dehydrated by centrifuging after having been previously conditioned with polyelectrolyte.
