The retriever is typically located over a golf ball 11 and when moved down guard ring 6 pivots between fixed loops 1, 2 and drops under ball 11 to hold it captively and allow the retriever to be lifted. Ball 11 is removed from the retriever by pivoting ring 6 thereby allowing ball 11 to fall free.
