PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective film of a polarizing plate which improves the viewing angle of a vertical alignment(VA) liquid crystal display device in which liquid crystal molecules are perpendicular to an alignment plate when no voltage is applied, and to provide a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The protective film is used for a polarizing plate of a vertical alignment liquid crystal display device, and the film has such features that the retardation (Rt) of the film defined by formula (1): Rt=((nx+ny)/2-nz)×d ranges from 70 to 200 nm. In the formula, nx is the refractive index of the film in the direction parallel to the film forming direction, ny is the refractive index of the film in the direction perpendicular to the film forming direction, nz is the refractive index of the film in the thickness direction and d is the thickness (nm) of the film. |
