PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for drying a core column or beam timber stably without causing any crack during and after drying operation while shortening the drying time and reducing the drying cost, and technical means for simplifying the drying operation and reducing the cost of a dryer without requiring a humidity control function indispensable for conventional hot air drying operation. SOLUTION: A core timber is heated sufficiently with steam from a steam boiler until the central part has a temperature of 80-100 deg.C. Since steam processing is employed, temperature of the timber can be raised during that period while suppressing evaporation from the surface of the timber. After the temperature of the timber is raised, the timber is dried with hot air of the same temperature or higher without lowering the temperature in the way and without controlling the humidity.
