PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a magnetic recording and reproducing device of a simple configuration to the utmost, in the case of outputting video information in a form of adding sub video information, such as character video images and auxiliary video images for a title, a scene explanation/interpretation and a translation or the like to main video information, while ensuring the originality of the main video information. SOLUTION: A recording signal generating circuit 34 adds an identification signal cA to the main video information and adds an identification signal cB to the sub video information. A recording and reproducing circuit 40 separately records the above information to different areas of a magnetic tape 100. A video signal selection circuit 52 gives a reproduction signal E to a main video signal decoding circuit 53, when receiving the identification signal cA from an identification signal detection circuit 51 and gives the reproduction signal E to a sub video signal decoding circuit 54, when receiving the identification signal cB from the identification signal detection circuit 51. A video signal superimposing circuit 60 superimposes a main video signal A and a sub video signal B and outputs the superimposed video signal.
