PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of restraining a shading phenomenon structurally not by electric correction. SOLUTION: This image reader is constituted of an original holding means, a surface light emission light source for illuminating an original, a means for forming the image of the illuminated original and a sensor arranged on an image-formation surface. In the reader, the shape of the cross section of the surface light source coated with fluorescent paint is constituted of many inclined surfaces, and a normal group consisting of the normals of the inclined surfaces is formed to be converged on the vicinity of the entrance pupil of the image- formation means.
