OPTICAL FIBER RIBBON SEPARATOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ribbon separator 10 which separates an optical fiber ribbon into bundles of optical fibers. SOLUTION: The ribbon separator 10 includes a stationary shearing device 70 and a movable shearing device 50. The movable shearing device moves relatively to the stationary shearing device in a shearing stroke. Optical fiber ribbon support elements 42 which have an optical fiber ribbon reception slot 46 between them are adjacent to the shearing devices 50 and 70. When a cover member 60 of the ribbon separator is closed, stationary subslots 71 and 72 of the stationary shearing device conform to movable subslots 51 and 52 to form shearing slots 51 and 71, and 52 and 72. Each shearing slot includes a shearing edge outline including at least two linear edges which approximate at least one arc and is large enough to receive an optical fiber ribbon and each shearing slot straddles a shearing surface M determined between the shearing device 17 and 27. At least one shearing device is formed from a single material piece in one body.
