Oil in water emulsions containing propofol and edetate for producing anaesthesia

Disclosed is the use of 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) as an anesthetic. The composition comprises an oil-in-water emulsion in which propofol, dissolved in a water-immiscible solvent, is emulsified with water and is stabilized by means of a surfactant. The composition further comprises an amount of edetate sufficient to prevent significant growth of micro-organisms for at least 24 hours after adventitious, extrinsic contamination. Preferred compositions may include: 1% by weight of propofol 10% by weight of soy bean oil 1.2% by weight of egg phosphatide 2.25% by weight of glycerol 0.005% by weight of disodium edetate sodium hydroxide water
