The conductor in which current is to be measured is bent into a U-shape around a central cutout (22) in one half of the housing (12) to which is fitted a sensing module (26) including a PCB on which the actual current measuring element is mounted. This can comprise a coil former (24) around which a secondary winding can be wound so that it fits within the central cutout to form a current transformer with the current carrying conductor as a primary. Alternatively, a Hall effect sensor may be fitted to the PCB instead of the coil former. A screened housing portion (30) fits over the sensor PCB when the latter is in position. An Independent claim is included for an electricity meter including a measurement device according to the invention.
