PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader which can accurately read an embossment on even a bent card. SOLUTION: A cylindrical lens (Linear light generating means) 105 is used to irradiate the surface of a card 107 where a character string 99 is formed of an embossment part 107b, with the light emitted by an LD (light source) 101 and the reflected light on the surface of the card 107 is guided to a PSD (photodetecting element) 115 which has its photodetection part divided into at least plural parts in the line direction of linear light; and the linear light generating means and card 107 are relatively moved along the character string 99 to detect the displacement distribution on the surface of the card 107 along the height. Reflected light from a plane PL other then the embossment on the surface of the card 107 is made incident on at least one photodetecting element 115b or 115c among PSDs 115.
